Mobile App Development Process
Whether you want to create an Android app, an iOS app or both, the journey from idea to the app stores follows the same stages. Understanding them helps you plan a realistic timeline, avoid expensive rework and ask better questions of any app development company.
The 7 stages of mobile app development
- 01
Idea & validation
Define the problem, the users and why they’d install an app. Talk to real users before writing code.
- 02
Scope & requirements
List user roles and features; split into “version one” and “later”. Agree integrations and the admin panel.
- 03
UX: flows & wireframes
Map every journey — signup, core action, payment, support — as low-fidelity screens.
- 04
UI design & prototype
Branded screens and a clickable prototype to test with users and stakeholders.
- 05
Development
App, backend and admin panel built in sprints, with test builds at each step.
- 06
Testing & QA
Functional, device, performance and security testing on real phones.
- 07
Launch & iterate
Store submission and review, release, monitoring, then improvements from real usage.
How long does it take to develop an app?
Timelines depend on scope and how quickly decisions and content are ready. Indicatively:
| Scope | Typical timeline |
|---|---|
| Simple app / MVP with one user role | A few weeks to around two months |
| Business app with admin panel and integrations | Around two to four months |
| Multi-app platform (taxi, delivery, marketplace) | Several months, usually phased |
Store review adds time at launch, especially for a first iOS submission. These are general ranges, not a quote.
How to create an Android app (and an iOS app)
For Android, apps are built in Kotlin (native) or with a cross-platform framework, tested on a range of devices and published through Google Play Console after a one-time registration. For iOS, apps are built in Swift or cross-platform, tested via TestFlight and published through App Store Connect with an Apple Developer Program membership — and every release goes through Apple’s review.
If you want both, a single Flutter or React Native codebase is often the most efficient path.
Choosing the best technology for your app
| If your app needs… | Consider |
|---|---|
| Android + iOS on a sensible budget | Flutter or React Native |
| Heavy graphics, AR, or deep device features | Native (Kotlin / Swift) |
| Real-time tracking or chat | A backend with real-time support (e.g. WebSockets, Firebase) |
| Reuse of an existing React web app | React Native |
| Mostly content, rarely installed | Maybe a website or PWA instead — see mobile app vs website |
Compare: Flutter vs React Native · Native vs hybrid · Mobile app vs website.
How to choose an app development company
- Ask to see live apps on the stores — not just designs
- Check they build the admin panel and backend, not only screens
- Get a written scope with features per user role
- Confirm who owns the code and store accounts
- Ask how they test (real devices? which ones?)
- Ask what support looks like after launch
- Meet the team that will actually build it
- Prefer phased delivery with regular test builds
