How Website Development Works
If you’ve never built a website before, the process can feel like a black box. It isn’t. A well-run website project follows clear stages, each with decisions you’ll make and outputs you’ll approve. Here’s exactly how it works — and what you should expect from your agency at each step.
The 7 stages of a website project
- 01
Discovery
Goals, customers, competitors, services and what a successful website looks like for you. You provide: business details and examples you like.
- 02
Strategy & planning
Sitemap, page goals, keyword map, platform choice and content plan. You approve: the structure.
- 03
Design
Wireframes, then visual designs for key pages on mobile and desktop. You approve: the look and flow.
- 04
Content
Text, images, videos and proof gathered or created. You provide or review: content.
- 05
Development
Building templates, CMS, forms, integrations and SEO foundations.
- 06
Testing
Devices, browsers, speed, forms, links, security and accessibility checks.
- 07
Launch & growth
Go-live, redirects, analytics, Search Console, training and ongoing improvements.
Discovery and planning: where most projects succeed or fail
The most expensive mistakes happen when development starts before anyone has agreed what the website is for. A short discovery phase answers: who are your customers, what do they need to know, what action should they take, and how will we measure success? The output is a sitemap and a brief that everyone signs off.
This is also where the platform is chosen — WordPress, Shopify or custom code — based on your needs, not habit.
Design: approve before anything is built
Good agencies show you real designs, not descriptions. You should see the homepage and key templates on both mobile and desktop and be able to give feedback before development starts. Changing a design is cheap; changing a built page is not. Learn what to look for in what makes a good website design.
Development and testing
During development, designs become working templates. SEO foundations (headings, meta, schema, sitemap), tracking, forms and integrations are wired in. Testing covers real phones, browsers, page speed, form delivery, broken links and security basics. Ask your agency what their testing checklist includes.
How long does website development take?
| Project type | Typical timeline |
|---|---|
| Package business website (GotechDigi) | Built within 7 days once requirements are finalised, plus a week of unlimited revisions |
| Custom-designed business website | Several weeks, depending on pages and feedback speed |
| E-commerce store | Depends mainly on catalogue size and product data readiness |
| Custom web application | Scoped individually with milestones |
The biggest cause of delays is usually content — collecting text, photos and approvals. Start gathering early.
What to prepare before you start
- Logo and brand colours (if you have them)
- List of services or products
- Photos of your work, team and premises
- Websites you like — and why
