Comparison
Android vs iOS App Development
Should your first app be Android, iOS or both? In India the answer is often different from the US or UK. It depends on who your customers are, how you make money from the app, and your budget for the first release.
Android vs iOS for Indian businesses
| Android | iOS | |
|---|---|---|
| Share of Indian smartphones | Large majority | Smaller, premium-heavy |
| Typical audience | Mass market, drivers, delivery, field staff, SMEs | Premium shoppers, professionals, international users |
| Device variety | Very high — test widely | Limited — easier to test |
| Store fees | One-time registration | Annual developer membership |
| Review | Automated + policy checks, usually quick | Human review of every release |
| Language | Kotlin (or cross-platform) | Swift (or cross-platform) |
How to decide
Launch on Android first if you’re serving a broad Indian audience, a workforce (drivers, agents, delivery partners) or price-sensitive customers. Include iOS from the start if your buyers are premium, professional or international, or your business model depends on high spend per user.
Increasingly, the answer is both at once with a cross-platform codebase — the extra cost over a single platform is usually modest. Most of our own apps, like Rentido and Makaan24, launched on both stores.
Development and testing differences
Android runs on thousands of device models from many manufacturers, with different screen sizes, memory, Android versions and battery-saving behaviour. Good Android development means testing on a realistic spread of phones — especially low- and mid-range devices common in India — and handling background tasks carefully so features like live location keep working.
iOS runs on a small, predictable set of iPhones that update quickly to the latest iOS version. Testing is simpler, but Apple’s design and privacy expectations are stricter, and every release is reviewed by a human before it reaches users.
Publishing on Google Play vs the App Store
| Google Play | Apple App Store | |
|---|---|---|
| Developer account | One-time registration fee | Annual Apple Developer Program fee |
| Review | Policy checks; usually faster | Human review of every version |
| Beta testing | Internal, closed and open testing tracks | TestFlight |
| Privacy disclosure | Data safety section | Privacy nutrition labels |
| Digital goods payments | Google Play Billing rules apply | In-app purchase rules apply |
Monetisation and audience
If your app earns from transactions — rides, orders, bookings — reach usually matters more than spend per user, which favours Android in India. If it earns from premium subscriptions or targets international customers, iOS often contributes a disproportionate share of revenue. Many businesses start with the platform their first thousand customers use, then add the other once the model is proven.
Whichever you choose, plan the backend and admin panel to support both from day one; adding the second app later is then mostly front-end work. See our app development services.
FAQs
Questions, answered
Is Android or iOS cheaper to develop?
For the same app, effort is broadly similar; building both natively roughly doubles the app work. Cross-platform reduces that.
Which platform makes more money?
It depends on your model. iOS users often spend more per user; Android reaches far more users in India.
Pehle Android launch karke baad mein iOS laa sakte hain?
Haan. If you plan this, building with Flutter or React Native makes adding iOS much faster.
